Description:
In 2011, the Virginia Tech Department of Entomology and friends will organize and host the first annual Alwood Days - a festival to promote the fun and excitement of the science of entomology and to celebrate the Alwood legacy.

The event will take place in the Agriculture Quad behind Price Hall on the west end of the Drillfield.

A fun time for all, the Bugfest is an event for kids of all ages. This year's event will be held from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Come see insect exhibits featuring honey bees, bed bugs, and cockroaches; the Hokie Bird; and much more!

Schedule:
10:00 am - Opening Ceremony - Budding Junior Entomologists Can Pick Up Your Passports at the Gift Shop Tent

10:00 am - Art and Crafts Tent Opens - enter the art contest by creating a painting on the art wall

10:30 am - Alberti Flea Circus -- Amphitheatre - Ag. Quad (in case of rain - 146 Smyth Hall Auditorium)

11:30 am - Campus Tree Tour - including the Alwood Oak

12:30 pm - Alberti Flea Circus -- Amphitheatre - Ag. Quad (in case of rain - 146 Smyth Hall Auditorium)

1:30 pm - Campus Tree Tour - including the Alwood Oak

2:00 pm - Student Art Contest - winners - artwork from the art wall made at the Bugfest - Prizes

2:30 pm - Alberti Flea Circus -- Amphitheatre - Ag. Quad (in case of rain - 146 Smyth Hall Auditorium)

3:00 pm - Exhibits Close

3:30 pm - Screening - "Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo" - 146 Smyth Hall - Auditorium - Free Admission.

Professor Alwood was Virginia's first entomologist. He established the discipline at Virginia Tech and led the way through research and teaching to enable Virginians to successfully grow their fruit crops relatively free of pests and diseases. Professor Alwood was a visionary and brilliant scientist. He was one of an elite group of pioneer entomologists who established pest management in the land-grant university and agricultural experiment station system in America. This group banded together to form the American Association of Economic Entomologists (today the Entomological Society of America).

Alwood was one of the first to promote the safe use of pesticides and integrated pest management methods. He contributed to the success of a struggling institute that is today Virginia Tech. We celebrate his memory through Alwood Days -- the Hokie Bugfest.
