Description:
On Sunday, June 19 at 2 pm at Historic Smithfield in Blacksburg there will be a remembrance ceremony of slaves who lived and worked at Smithfield, which will include readings from God’s Trombones and the dedication of slave cemetery markers in the Preston cemetery. The cemetery is accessed from Southgate Drive near the intersection with Duckpond Drive.

The name of the commemoration is a contraction of June 18th and 19th, which were the dates in 1865 that the last slaves in Galveston, Texas found out that the Civil War was over and they had been freed. Celebrations all over the nation commemorate African American freedom and celebrate education and achievement.
