Description: The Lyric Theatre continues their 2022/2023 Live at the Lyric series with An Evening with Shawn Mullins with support from Kat Mills on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

Shawn Mullins is an American singer-songwriter who specializes in folk rock, instrumental rock, adult alternative, and Americana music. He is best known for the 1998 single “Lullaby”, which hit number one on the Adult Top 40 and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Mullins was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He cultivated an interest in music beginning in his days at Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Georgia. Later, he honed his craft in his college days at North Georgia College and State University as a solo acoustic musician and bandmaster of the military marching band (Golden Eagle Band). He attended North Georgia College and State University on an Army ROTC scholarship with an intention of possibly pursuing a military career. Although he quickly abandoned this notion in favor of songwriting, the contract nonetheless obliged him after graduation to serve a short term as an inactive Infantry officer in the Individual Ready Reserve component of the U.S. Army Reserve.

His critical breakthrough came when his song “Lullaby”, from the album Soul’s Core, became a radio and video hit. One of his more famous songs, “All in My Head”, was featured on the hit television sitcom “Scrubs”. This song was written after an e-mail was sent out by the producers of the new show searching for a theme song. Mullins wrote a demo version and sent it in within 24 hours. It wasn’t selected as the theme song, but the demo version was used in a season one episode of the series.

Another single, “Shimmer”, was included on the soundtrack for the TV show Dawson’s Creek and was a minor hit. “Shimmer” was also used in Australia as part of its promotional campaign during the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics and is still considered in Australia as the unofficial anthem of the games. To date he has yet to match the overwhelming commercial success of “Lullaby”, which was also released as a live performance on the charity album Live in the X Lounge II in 1999. In early 2002, he formed the supergroup The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge.

For its 20th anniversary, Shawn is revisiting the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He is calling this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album will be new stripped down solo performances, some on guitar, some on piano and maybe one a cappella and the second will be a new studio recording with his full band, Soul Carnival.

Kat Mills performs soul folk music to soothe you and is based in Blacksburg, VA and tours throughout the East. She is a writer, singer, guitarist and seeker rooted in GenX habits, nodding and winking to 60s and 70s troubadour traditions, and openly commenting on the aches and triumphs of the moment. Any way you hear it, Kat's powerful vocal range, vintage Martin guitar, and mystic vibes combine to produce a clean honest sound that leaves audiences wanting more.

Kat Mills believes in the power of folk music, now more than ever, to transport and transcend. A troubled day, or world, can be soothed by a song. At a time when we have almost forgotten how to be still, to listen, to reflect and then engage, Kat Mills helps us remember.

She was a founding member of acclaimed newgrass band, Grass. Kat is currently based in Blacksburg VA and touring as a solo singer and songwriter throughout the East and beyond. Kat has been inspiring all with her music, her smoky voice and heartfelt lyrics for years.

Her vintage guitars and throwback threads remind you of another era, but her soulful original songs and stories are for the here and now. Kat Mills has made records, won awards, and worked with some of the big names, but she really just wants to use her voice for good.

Kat has proudly been involved in Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival (NY), Floyd Fest (VA), Solar Fest (VT), The Takoma Park Folk Festival (DC) and other events lining up with issues of social justice and environmental responsibility. Favorite opening sets have supported Levon Helm, Dar Williams, Dori Freeman and Sarah Lee Guthrie.

Songwriter series, in-the-rounds, and house concerts have been a mainstay. But Kat Mills is equally at home on a theater or café stage, having played notable songwriter venues including The Towne Crier, Rosendale Café, The Lyric Theatre, Caffe Lena, Jefferson Center, and Kirk Avenue Music Hall. She was a finalist in the 2015 NewSong/LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, has had original song placements in film and podcasts, and appears as a backing vocalist for other artists, most recently with super-group “Reelin’ in the Years: A Tribute to Steely Dan” at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock NY.
