The Cayambis Institute for Latin American Studies in Music (CILASiM), a hemispheric leader in the performance, composition, and publishing of Latin American classical music, is pleased to announce the inaugural concert of a new ensemble, the Cayambis Sinfonietta, titled "A Pan-American Journey! A Program of Classical Music of the Americas" on Thursday, May 19, 2022 inside Performance Hall within the Covington Center on the campus of Radford University. The program, which will feature music from the United States as well as from a number of Latin American countries, will include compositions from the mid 19th century up to the present day. The ten member ensemble is made up of some of the area’s finest musicians, such as flutist Elizabeth Lantz, percussionist Al Wojtera and bassoonist Amber Ferenz. The ensemble will be conducted by CILASiM president & CEO, Dr. John L. Walker. The Cayambis Sinfonietta was created by the nonprofit to inspire a greater appreciation of the classical music of the Americas. Admission is free and open to the public. Speaking about this new group, Walker said, “Founding this ensemble and organizing this concert seemed like a natural step for an organization interested in promoting all aspects of Latin American classical music.” The Cayambis Institute (CILASiM) is a nonprofit organization based in Blacksburg, Virginia. Founded in 2019, CILASiM seeks to strengthen the awareness and appreciation of Latin American classical music by developing a full spectrum approach to its creation, performance and scholarship, and in so doing, cultivate bonds of goodwill and unity among the peoples of the Americas.
