July's Buddy Check 22 - Veterans Social Event:

Date: July 22, 2022
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Venue: Macado's (Radford)
Organizations: Marine Corps League - New River Valley
Description: The Marine Corps League - New River Valley presents July's Buddy Check 22, a Veterans Social Event, at Macado's in Radford, VA on Friday, July 22, 2022.

Please join us at our monthly Buddy Check 22 social event for veteran suicide prevention. We meet on the 22nd of each month from 6:00-8:00 PM at Macado's in Radford, and they give everyone a 50% discount on all food!

Everyone is invited. The Marine Corps League hosts the event, but we welcome veterans from all branches of service along with family, friends, and anyone who would like to help prevent veteran suicides.

A 2013 study by the Department of Veteran Affairs showed that 22 veterans take their own lives every day. Although that number has fluctuated a bit since then, the number 22 has become the symbol of veteran suicide prevention. Buddy Check 22 is a national program aimed at preventing veteran suicides. The program does this by having veterans gather together or call each other on the 22nd of the month to check in and ensure everyone is doing okay.

Marine Corps League Detachment #1190 supports this program in the New River Valley by hosting a social event on the 22nd of each month where veterans can gather together, have a good time, and build healthy relationships. The ultimate goal is that, in a time of need, a veteran will know that there is someone who understands his/her struggle and will call someone for help.

A Facebook Group was created to offer another way for Veterans in the New River Valley to connect with one another on days other than the 22nd of the month. To visit the group, visit: https://www.facebook.com/groups/322865849462310.

If you are a veteran who has considered suicide or you know a veteran who is, please visit the Veterans Crisis Line web page or call them at 1-800-273-8255. Every veteran deserves to know that we care about them.
