The Floyd Country Store presents the Friday Night Jamboree outside with The Comptons and Whitetop Mountain Band on Friday, September 24, 2021. The Compton brothers, Darryl and Roger, began playing bluegrass gospel music in the 80's in church then was joined shortly after by their dad, Clinton Compton. The three make their home in Willis, VA in Floyd county. The band just changed members about a year and a half ago. Tim Goins from Mt. Airy, NC now plays dobro and banjo with the group, whichever the song may call for. Tim in the past has played with such groups as the Easter Brothers, Mark Templeton and New Vision, Lynwood Lunsford and many more. There are times when the Compton' friends consist of Doug Holly from Floyd on guitar and some vocals, also Jimmy Creed, cousin of the Comptons, on mandolin or guitar. They have deep roots in mountain music and their members have done much to preserve the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking. Their performances are also noted for their versatility, often containing blues, classic country, honky tonk pieces and traditional bluegrass. They are a tour de force of playing, singing, and dance, and they are gifted entertainers as well. They are one of the busiest groups in the Appalachians, performing concerts, festivals, competitions and for dances in America and abroad in the United Kingdom and Australia. They have been featured in many books, magazines and TV/radio shows about Appalachian music such as "The Guide to the Crooked Road", "Strings of Life”, Country Music Television, Travel Channel, PBS and more. The Friday Night Jamboree happens every Friday, rain or shine, all year round at the Floyd Country Store. The first hour is gospel music and this is followed by two dance bands. The dance bands provide the right beat for our enthusiastic crowd of flat foot dancers and cloggers. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $8.00 in support of the musicians. Additionally, if you can’t join us live, check out the livestream on Facebook and Youtube. The livestream is free with donations accepted to support the musicians. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. No dogs allowed or alcohol allowed. The Jamboree operates on “Granny’s Rules” – no smoking, no drinking alcohol, no bad language, and no conduct unbecoming to a lady or a gentleman. It’s a great time for the whole family, and you’re likely to see kids from six to ninety-six out on our hardwood dance floor. You may even be one of them.
