The Choices and Challenges Forum presents "Technology & Disability: Counternarratives" on Friday, March 27, 2020 at The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center.

Event Schedule:
• 10:15-11:30 AM: Mental Health & Education
• 12:30-1:45 PM: Autism Tech & Autistic Experience
• 1:55-1:25 PM: Crip Poetics
• 2:30-3:45 PM: High-Tech "Fixes" & Disability
• 4:00-5:00 PM: Cyborg Promenade with Sammus the Rapper

Popular culture often depicts disabled people as the recipients of technology or people who should be hopeful for such development. At this event, we’ll hear from disability community members and allies about different ways we might think about people, technologies, disability, and institutions. The stories we tell are about technology and the human condition. We’ll hear about resistance, pride, optimism, and anger. We seek conversations that take seriously the voices of disabled people in regards to assistive technologies, inclusive education, and accessible environments.

The event will culminate in a performance by Sammus the Rapper (stage name of Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo, PhD), whose music prominently features themes of technology, mental health, and higher education.

This forum is free and open to the public.

American Sign Language (ASL) and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) will be provided.

This Choices and Challenges forum is presented with support from the Department of Science, Technology, and Society (STS), the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS), the Center for the Humanities, An Advancing the Human Condition Symposium Grant, and a National Science Foundation CAREER Grant (Disability, Experience, and Technological Imagination, #1750260).
