The American Soldier Transcribe-a-Thon 2019:

Date: November 11, 2019
Time: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Venue: Newman Library (Virginia Tech)
Description: The American Soldier in World War II presents its Second Veterans Day Transcribathon in the Athenaeum at the Newman Library on the campus of Virginia Tech on Monday, November 11, 2019 as part of the Virginia Tech Department of History's Veterans Week.

Join thousands of "citizen-archivists" transcribing a rare collection of uncensored reflections on WWII combat and military service by American troops hosted by Jessica Brabble.

The American Soldier in World War II is a project to make available to scholars and to the public a remarkable collection of written reflections on war and military service by American soldiers who served during the Second World War. By visiting the Blacksburg Library during this event, community members will be able to help transcribe handwritten, intimate letters from World War II soldiers.

Each uncensored page provides a window into the daily lives of soldiers who served in the Second World War. In these handwritten reflections, American GIs and officers share their frustration with red tape, their longing for creaturely comforts, their worries and boredom, along with the exhilaration of returning home at the end of their tours.

You never know what you might discover in The American Soldier project!
