Color Theory & Natural Solar Dye Workshop:

Date: July 21, 2019
Time: 2:00 - 5:00 PM
Venue: New River Art & Fiber
Cost: $85.00
Description: New River Fiber Co. presents a Color Theory & Natural Solar Dye Workshop on Sunday, July 21, 2019.

Do you struggle choosing colors for projects? Do you usually default to making something in the same colors as the pattern designer or another maker on Ravelry? Do you tend to make every project in the same couple of colors? Learning a little bit of color theory could break you out of your color prison!

But, understanding color theory is only part of the equation! That understanding then needs to be applied to pigments, the substances that impart color to a substrate, in our case, yarn! This process has been done for millenia using foraged or harvested materials readily available in our natural world. Visiting for an afternoon to teach us the remarkably simple and effective method of solar dyeing is our region's very own Siobhan Boothe of Yarn Over Floyd.

In this class, Jess will guide you through painting your own mini color wheel while we talk about why certain colors work well together and why others don't, the importance of considering tone in a multi-color project, and some basic "rules" that will have you choosing colors with confidence. Then, Jess will turn things over to Siobhan and she will talk a little bit about her practice, which materials are most effective at imparting color to yarn using the Solar Dye method, and answer any questions you might have about sourcing natural dyes right here in Southwest VA.

The cost is $85.00 per person for this beginner workshop and includes all materials and will be led by instructor Jessica Jones and Siobhan Boothe.
