The Hickory Flat Hoedowners is comprised of a group of performers ranging in ages from six to forty-nine, dedicated to preserving the heritage of Southern Appalachian clogging and enjoyment of clog dancing. The team was formed February 3, 1985 by a nationally recognized instructor, Elliott Skeen. Elliott Skeen taught classes and hand picked his dancers to help build a competitive team that also preserved the Southern Appalachian dance form. Elliott is an accomplished clogger learning his skills from the “old timers” such as Glen Nance. He took the time to attend sessions to learn from the leading authorities of Southern Appalachian Clogging and Square Dancing such as Bill Nichols, Garland Steel and Bob Johnson along with researching the proper dance form and music.

The team has won numerous awards and holds well over 25 Consecutive National Titles in Kentucky Running Set Hoedown, Country Hoedown, Kentucky Running Set Precision, Four Couple Precision, and Southern Appalachian Clogging not only with America’s Clogging Hall of Fame but also with the National Clogging and Hoedown Council from 1986-2000 when the team stopped competing. They have placed in many regional competitions winning many Grand Champion trophies.

The Hickory Flat Hoedowners have quite a bit to be proud of with all their accomplishments. They have competed and performed all up and down the East Coast and as far west as Branson, Missouri. In June of 1988 Congressman Howard Coble invited The Hickory Flat Hoedowners to perform at the Capitol Steps in Washington, D.C. In 1987 Hickory Flat traveled to Texas and participated dancing in the half time show for a football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Vikings. Also, in 1987 the team traveled to Raleigh, NC to dance in the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Festival with Charlie Daniels. The team has made various trips to Galax, VA to dance at the Galax Fiddler’s Convention. They were the spot light team for many years. They continue to this day to perform at local Fiddler’s conventions, The Lexington Multicultural Festival in Lexington, NC, various competitions and local performance venues.

The tradition is still alive with this team and it’s dancers. There are still some of the same original cloggers from when the team was together in the 80’s that share this love of the traditional dance form with their children. The Hickory Flat Hoedowners have an Elementary, Senior and Adult division clogging team. Each clogger brings energy and enthusiasm to the team making them a fun group to watch.
