Repair Cafe:

Date: October 14, 2017
Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Venue: Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Organizations: New River Valley Timebank
Description: The New River Valley Timebank and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore presents Repair Cafe on Saturday, October 14, 2017.

A Repair Cafe is a free event that promotes repair as an alternative to tossing things out. Visitors bring their broken items in need of repair, and we will supply the tools, materials and expertise to help get them back into shape. Repair Cafes have been gaining popularity around the world the last few years. Charlottesville is already the home of a very popular Repair Cafe hosted by the C-ville TimeBank.

Volunteers will be on board to fix small electronics, wooden furniture, and clothing, as well as providing IT support and knife sharpening.

“Our goal is to at least diagnose problems that we can’t fix on site. This will empower the public to make decisions about whether to repair or replace items brought in. Even if we can’t help them on the spot, we want them to leave with a good idea of what to do,” said Kim Snider of Habitat for Humanity.

The Repair Cafe will only consider repairing reasonably sized items. Sleeper Sofas, large wardrobes and dressers, etc. will not be admitted.

All are welcome and participation is free.

There will also be a sustainability exposition in the parking lot of the Restore hosted by the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech, with tips on how to make households more sustainable and hands-on activities for all ages.

The Repair Cafe is being provided through a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of the NRV, the NRV TimeBank, and the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech.
