John K. Hale Lecture Series: Daniel Thorp - Early European Settlement of the New River Valley:

Date: June 20, 2017
Time: 6:30 - 7:30 PM
Venue: Giles County Historical Society Museum
Description: The Giles County Historical Society Museum presents the first John K. Hale Lecture Series of 2017 featuring Daniel Thorp presenting the talk titled "Early European Settlement of the New River Valley" on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Beginning about 1740, small numbers of European settlers began moving into the New River Valley. They were, said one of them, “beyond all Christian governments,” but they soon began to clear farms, establish churches, and build small but successful communities throughout the region. By the time the American Revolution began, German, English, Scots-Irish, and African Americans lived and worked throughout the New River Valley. This talk will explore why they came, the challenges they faced, and how they overcame them.

Daniel Thorp is a professor of History at Virginia Tech.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

The Giles County Historical Society Museum is located at 208 North Main Street in Pearisburg, VA.
