Description: The Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center presents A Taste of Wine & Art with Scott Crawford on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Old Main Street Baptist Church in downtown Christiansburg, VA.

Join us for a fun and lively evening with Scott Crawford as he tells about his exploration of the Gilbert Stuart 1796 portrait of George Washington. Participation is encouraged to explore how a 220 year old portrait can speak to us. As always you are in for a treat as Scott goes behind the scenes to enlighten and entertain you!

In this lively talk, historian B. Scott Crawford will share his latest findings related to Gilbert Stuart's 1796 Lansdowne Portrait that depicts George Washington on the eve of his retiring from the office of President. Crawford will set the work within a larger historical context, exploring the work's rich symbolism and relating the portrait to Washington's presidency and Farewell Address.

Through these connections, with emphasis placed on a small item in the portrait that arguably unlocks a deeper meaning of the portrait, participants will explore how Biblical and Masonic imagery transform Washington into an American Noah. Ultimately, the portrait may just contain a visual reflection of important advice Washington gave the nation at the end of his presidency advice that helps answer the question: ”how can a republic such as the United States survive?"

Tickets are $20.00 for the general public and $15 for students and include with wine and hor d'oeuvres. Advance ticket purchase required by calling 540-382-5644.
