Description: The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents Raisin' Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey on Saturday, January 28, 2017.

Step into the world of the Harlem Renaissance through words, music, and imagery with Raisin’ Cane, a production inspired by the classic 1923 Jean Toomer novel, Cane. In 1918, as the first great World War ended and thousands of African-American soldiers returned home, a mountain of artistic expression was ready to explode, and the words and thoughts of Toomer, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B. Du Bois, and others became the voice of a new generation. These voices are woven into an experience that spans this era and provides a window on a critical point in history.

Raisin' Cane features award-winning actress, singer, and dancer Jasmine Guy and the acclaimed Avery Sharpe Trio. Guy was the star of the television show A Different World and has appeared in Broadway and national productions, including Spike Lee’s School Daze, as well as in Harlem Nights. Avery Sharpe is one of the greatest jazz bassists of his generation and has toured with the world’s top jazz musicians. Sharpe is joined onstage by the renowned percussionist Kevin Sharpe and acclaimed jazz violinist Diane Monroe.

Written and conceived by Harry Clark with adaptation by Jasmine Guy. Original musical score by Avery Sharpe.

Tickets are available at the Moss Arts Center Box Office in person Monday-Friday from 10 am - 6 pm and by phone at 540-231-5300.
