Description: The Alexander Black House & Cultural Center presents Meet the Artist Reception for "Inspired by Edward Hopper: Photography by Joe Jennelle" on Friday, October 7, 2016 starting at 5 pm.

Edward Hopper was an American artist born in 1880 whose career blossomed during the 1920s and 1930s. After living in Paris, he returned to America capturing urban environments of the Industrial Revolution, emphasizing people who seemed insignificant, alone and isolated. After relative failure working on a scenic, rural phase of his career, his use of specific colors, tones, and lighting in an urban setting elevated his work in reviews of critics of his time.

In our upcoming exhibition, Blacksburg native and Virginia Tech graduate Joe Jennelle has applied some of Hopper’s principles to the streets of Blacksburg with glimpses of everyday lives. After leaving Blacksburg to pursue a career in education, retirement afforded him the opportunity to return and pursue his true passion, photography. His areas of interest evolved from scenic to wildlife to portrait to fine art.

The exhibit will be on display from September 21, 2016 to October 29, 2016. Regular hours are 10 AM to 4 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.
