Visiting Blacksburg after playing at the Kennedy Center, these two bands, The Boston Boys and Khumariyaan mix genres and blend traditional and modern instruments.

Future Roots band, The Boston Boys, founded in Boston in 2012, live in Brooklyn, and play around the world. In just two years, they’ve performed in over a dozen countries on several continents. Their unique instrumentation, musicality, and fearless live performance have resulted in partnerships (US State Department, Zoo Labs, The Breeding Ground NYC,) support for other touring artists (The Infamous Stringdusters, The Wood Brothers,) rewarding the band with influences from across the Americas, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

With its propulsive, furious sound, Khumariyaan "The Intoxicators" has reawakened the live music scene in Peshawar, the ancient crossroads through the Khyber Pass whose contemporary culture is under attack from within and by outside factions. The lute-like Pashtoon rubab, is the meeting point for this instrumental jam quartet. It intertwines with the djembe-like zerbaghali (clay or wooden goblet drum) and Pushtoon sitar (long-necked lute). Underpinning these instruments with driving acoustic guitars, Khumariyaan’s rolling pulse and richly layered sound builds to frenzied intensity. It’s an addictive and accessible pleasure that’s ushering in a new era for an eclipsed music.
