Description: Live at The Lyric presents singer Bettye LaVette in concert on Friday, December 12th at The Lyric Theatre.

Bettye LaVette, a soul singer-songwriter who made her first record at sixteen, when she recorded the single, “My Man – He's a Lovin' Man”. The success of that single led to her touring with legendary soul and R&B performers like Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King, Barbara Lynn and a then relatively unknown, Otis Redding. LaVette went on to become of a member of the James Brown Revue for a brief period. She's recorded with legendary session players like Memphis' Dixie Flyers and Muscles Shoals Rhythm Section aka The Swampers. In the mid-80s LaVette put recording on the back burner while she did a six–year run in the Broadway smash Bubbling Brown Sugar, appearing alongside Honi Coles and Cab Calloway.

Her eclectic musical style combines elements of soul, blues, rock and roll, funk, gospel, and country music. In recent years, LaVette has been back in the studio, steadily releasing modern-day classics in blues and soul, including I've Got My Own Hell to Raise, which saw her performing songs written solely by women, The Scene of the Crime, which featured the Drive-By Truckers as her backup band, and Interpretations: the British Rock Songbook, which included unique arrangements and performances of classic songs by artists including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, and Pink Floyd. A multi-Grammy nominated artist, she has also been the recipient of numerous other awards including the “Pioneer Award” from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, a Blues Music Award for “Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer” as well as accolades for her breathtaking performance at the Kennedy Center Honors.
