Date: July 24, 2014
Time: 6:30 - 7:30 PM
Venue: Blacksburg Library
Description: The Blacksburg Library presents the program The 1864 Battle of the New River Bridge on Thursday, July 24, 2014.

April Danner, Historic Smithfield's Deputy Museum Administrator, will present a vivid account of the battle of the New River Bridge (modern day Radford) after the Confederates were defeated at Cloyd’s Mountain on May 9, 1864. The main objective of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad raid which brought the Union Army into the New River Valley was the 700 foot covered bridge across the river. That bridge was the weakest link in the longest single gauged rail line in the entire Confederacy. April will describe how the Confederate army protected the bridge until Grant organized the most successful raid by sending Crook’s army on a 21 day raid of destruction!
