Market Square Jam with host Sugar Run Band:

Date: August 06, 2014
Time: 8:00 - 10:00 PM
Venue: Market Square Park
Description: The Town of Blacksburg continues the 2014 Market Square Jam series with host the Sugar Run Band on Wednesday, August 6th.

Sugar Run began as the husband and wife team of Mike (banjo, guitar and vocals) and Bonnie Johnson (bass fiddle and vocals), and has grown to include Geoff White on fiddle and vocals, and Stanley Asbury on the rhythm and flat-pickin' style guitar and vocals. All of us play in or with other groups in the region, as well.

Our musical repertoire consists primarily of traditional music of the Southern Appalachian and Piedmont regions in the style of older (and some contemporary) Bluegrass, Old-Time, old “Country” music, a few Cajun tunes (in French, by Geoff) and some ancient ballads and tunes with roots back to the Scottish, Irish, and English lands. Our music includes songs of: love-gone-bad; train wrecks; bad-men and hangings; murders; ghosts and hauntings; moonshine whiskey; and death and Redemption. (Many, if not all those themes may occur in the same song!).

We also include songs of humor as well as peppy fiddle tunes suitable for flat-footin’, square dancing, or just standing around and tapping your feet.

Market Square Jam is a weekly jam session that takes place in the warmer months on Wednesday evenings from 8-11 pm at the site of the Farmers Market on the corner of Draper Road and Roanoke Street.

The Jam, catering to traditional old time and bluegrass music, brings musicians together to pick a tune, enjoy some fun times with their friends and family, and take in all that downtown Blacksburg has to offer.

If you’re a musician or just interested in learning, come on out to the Market Square Jam and play along. Or, if you’re just looking for some great music and a place to kick back on a Wednesday night, bring a chair, bring a blanket, and join us at the park.

Note: Aside from bench seating available in the park, additional seating is not provided. Musicians and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs.
