Description:
The Workingman Wreckchords Collective presents the Sovthern Gothic Fvtvrist Haikv Slam / Blue Globe Beats Space Jam on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Odd Fellows Building Lodge #20 on Wilson Avenue in Blacksburg, VA.

Schedule:
• 4:00 pm: Free Haiku Writing Workshop
• 6:30 pm: Sovthern Gothic Fvtvrist Haiku Poetry Slam and Short Performances start

Haiku slams are communal poetry events built around utilizing the 17 syllable (or less) format to have single-elimination come-one, come-all tournament where participants compete thru haiku. In the regular tournament you’ll need 15-20 haiku to compete thru to the end, but you may be eliminated earlier depending on the judges. Raven Mack regularly leads Haiku Slams across the region including Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia.

The event is a communal event of self-expression, family friendly, and in the spirit of the creative arts helping us to be better people, both individually and collectively, but also it’s meant to be good time.

Co-host Dirtgod Raven Mack, will take on a local valiant spirit warrior of the haiku form, the Teamaster, Alan Moore aka The Cropduster, in a haiku death match (best-of-19). There will also be a battle royal, for all those eliminated in the tournament early, as well as anybody else who wants to take part. You might only need 3-5 haiku for this part.

Though a competition, it’s not meant to be viciously competitive, but more of a poetic kimchi where we all share our individual flavors through the format.

There will also be a Blue Globe Beats Space Jam performance, featuring the southern gothic futuristic sounds of Boogie Brown, complemented by the Workingman Family Orchestra of assorted feral musicians and wordsmiths.

There is a $5.00 suggested donation to support the communal space as well as ongoing pipeline resistance efforts. If you cannot afford the suggested donation, you will not be turned away.

There will be a free haiku writing workshop at 4:00 pm, which may meander into other forms of self-expression, but will hopefully give people the inspiration to whip out some 17 syllable blasts of poetry for later in the evening. The workshop will be followed by a break for supper then the event will reconvene at 6:30 pm with some short performances, art and a Sovthern Gothic Fvtvrist Haiku Slam.

All ages invited to participate or watch with light snacks and beverages provided.

Art shall be done, ideas shall be expressed, thangs shall be poppin'.
