MerleFest on the Road is an ensemble show with a rotating cast of past and present MerleFest artists selected to represent the festival’s mission of celebrating “traditional plus music.” The show tours the South in late winter every year to highlight the artists and to promote the popular Americana music festival founded by the legendary Doc Watson.

2017 marks the 30th Celebration of MerleFest. About 80,000 music lovers attend the festival over the course of four days each April. The MerleFest artists for the 2017 show are Jonathan Byrd & the Pickup Cowboys, Locust Honey and Mark Bumgarner. Further information about the festival is available at http://merlefest.org.

Jonathan Byrd is a preacher’s son, a Gulf War veteran, and an award-winning songwriter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, known for literary, outsider songs that have become campfire favorites. The Chicago Tribune called Byrd “one of the top 50 songwriters of the past 50 years.”

Multi-instrumentalist Johnny Waken cut his teeth on electric guitar in Pittsburgh with rock legend Norm Nardini, opening for The Blues Brothers Band on their Red, Hot & Blue tour in 1992. On stage and after hours, he jammed with members of Bon Jovi and the legendary Steve Cropper. At the age of 24, Waken left music to pursue primitive skills and through-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000 with an eleven-pound pack. Returning to music years later Johnny joined theatre troupe Paperhand Puppet Intervention, contributing to scores for nine shows and winning four Indy Awards for best original music.

Jonathan Byrd and The Pickup Cowboy are musical gunslingers, vaudevillian hucksters, and old-fashioned tent revivalists. Between heartbreaking ballads and hell-raising sing-alongs, the Cowboys entertain and get audiences involved in the show.

As Locust Honey, Chloe Edmonstone and Meredith Watson bring their experience in Old-Time, Bluegrass, and Pre-War Blues to both their original material and the traditional songs and tunes of the American Southeast. With a rotating instrumentation of fiddles, open-back and resonator banjos, acoustic and resonator guitars, they set an emphasis on lively arrangements that showcase their signature vintage vocal harmonies. Joined by John Miller on upright bass, they have been touring the US, UK and Ireland since 2012.

Mark Bumgarner is a performing musician and songwriter of more than thirty years. In addition to his solo work, Mark has also been performing and recording in recent years with his wife Aimee as the duo Calico Moon.

As a songwriter Mark has had several of his works recorded by nationally recognized bluegrass and acoustic music artist, most notably Balsam Range and The Steep Canyon Rangers and Town Mountain. His musical style is a blend of roots country, bluegrass and rockin’ hillbilly blues that is true Southern Americana.
