Description:
The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine continues the 2020-21 Strauss Public Lecture Series online with the talk titled "Reconciling Privacy and Accountability: the Context of COVID-19" on Thursday, December 3, 2020.

The global pandemic has spawned a plethora of worried articles in the media about the fate of privacy. A couple of headlines capture the worry on which this seminar will focus: “Privacy Cannot Be a Casualty of the Coronavirus” and “Pandemic Data-Sharing Puts New Pressure on Privacy Protections.” For the first time in our lives, many Americans are being told en masse that we must stay at home.

Indeed, the new restrictions and mandates do, at least on the surface, go against the grain of a prevalent perspective that we have “personal lives” that are appropriately private; that our bodies, identities, personal information and associations, belong to us and that we can decide what to do with them. The seminar will explore how to reconcile accountability for health with strong privacy values.

The talk will be led by Dr. Anita A. Allen, The Henry R. Silverman Professor of Law at the Carey Law School, and Vice Provost for Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.

The talk is available for free on YouTube at: https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/events/live-webcast.html.
