Description:
Virginia Tech Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing presents the 2020/2021 Kickoff of the Virginia Tech Visiting Writers Series featuring author Khadijah Queen on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 .

Join us for our first virtual Visiting Writers & Teachers Series event of the year!

This event features a lecture as well as a Q&A period. This craft seminar explores the structural similarities between poetry and prose as well as the differences, discussing how to maximize poetry techniques in prose, how to plan a prose project, strategies for expansion of shorter pieces, and generative writing exercises.

Sample authors include: Meena Alexander, Dionne Brand, Heather Christle, Kimiko Hahn, Joy Harjo, Marge Piercy, Michael Ondaatje, Muriel Rukeyser, Claudia Rankine, Charles Simic, Divya Victor and others, with a bibliography for further study.

Khadijah Queen is the author of six books, including "I'm So Fine: A List of Famous Men & What I Had On (YesYes Books 2017), praised in O Magazine, The New Yorker, Rain Taxi, Los Angeles Review, and elsewhere as “quietly devastating” and “a portrait of defiance that turns the male gaze inside out.”

Her verse play Non-Sequitur (Litmus Press 2015) won the Leslie Scalapino Award for Innovative Women's Performance Writing, which included a staged production at Theaterlab NYC. Other books include Conduit (Black Goat/Akashic Books 2008), featured in Poets & Writers’ Debut Poets issue; Black Peculiar, winner of the 2010 Noemi Press book award and published in 2011; and Fearful Beloved (Argos Books 2015), partially written while Queen participated in artist Ann Hamilton’s event of a thread installation at Park Avenue Armory in 2013. Individual works appear in Harper’s Magazine, American Poetry Review, Fence, Gulf Coast, The Poetry Review (UK) and widely elsewhere.

Her latest book of poetry is "Anodyne", published in August 2020 by Tin House. She is an assistant professor of creative writing at University of Colorado, Boulder, and holds a PhD in English from University of Denver.
