Description:
The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents the Sirius Quartet performing “New World” on Thursday, October 3, 2019.
Sirius Quartet champions a forward-thinking, genre-defying approach to performing that makes labels like “new music” sound tame. New World explores the personal and political challenges of life in the 21st century. Violinist Gregor Huebner’s award-winning composition “New World Nov. 9 2016” is the centerpiece of the program, contrasting idyllic, hopeful themes of Dvorák's Largo from “New World Symphony” with the brutal gestures of Shostakovich’s String Quartet, no. 8.
Internationally acclaimed veterans of contemporary music, Sirius Quartet champions a forward-thinking, genre-defying approach to performing that makes labels like “new music” sound tame.
Sirius Quartet pushes beyond the conventional vocabulary of string instruments with exhilarating repertoire and unequalled improvisational fire. Born and bred in New York City's downtown music scene, Sirius has performed at major venues around the globe, including Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, the Andy Warhol Museum, LACMA, Stuttgart Jazz and the Beijing Music Festival.
Having premiered works by the likes of Phil Kline, Uri Caine and Richard Einhorn, Sirius makes significant contributions to the quartet repertoire with bold original works by its own members. Their forward-thinking, genre-defying approach -- with collaborations in post-rock, avant jazz and electronic music-makes labels like 'New Music' sound passé. These conservatory-trained performer/composers shine with the precision of classical music and a raw energy rarely witnessed in the concert hall.
