Description:
Beliveau Estate Winery presents Sunday Songs with Chloe and Stewart Scales on Sunday, May 26, 2019.

Hailing from opposite ends of the state of Virginia, Chloé and Stewart met in 2012 at the Floyd Country Store, brought together by a shared interest in the music of southwest Virginia. Chloé is a classically trained cellist who is exploring traditional music; Stewart is a self-taught bluegrass banjo, guitar, and bass player. Together they play a variety of styles, but folk and bluegrass are favorite genres. Chloé and Stewart married in 2016, and they now make their home in Catawba, Virginia. When they aren’t playing music, Chloé teaches Latin and Special Education at William Byrd High School and Stewart teaches Geography at Virginia Tech.

Chloé Scales grew up in Vienna, Virginia, outside of Washington D.C. She started playing cello when she was ten years old, and the cello remains her primary instrument. She also plays mountain dulcimer, folk harp, and viola da gamba. She began by learning classical music, but she always loved a wide variety of folk music, ranging from song-writers of the 1960’s and 1970’s, like Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell, to traditional folk and early music from Europe and America. She came to this part of the state to study Classics at Virginia Tech, and immersed herself in the tunes of the region. She fell in love with the mountains and music (and Stewart too of course), and now is happy to call Catawba her home.

Stewart Scales is from Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He started teaching himself guitar when he was twelve years old, and then transitioned to banjo as well. Later he picked up the upright bass. He attended Virginia Tech to study Geography, and he now teaches in that department with a focus on map-making, Appalachia, and even geography of tea. He always had a passion for local music and was influenced by his favorite performers, such as John Hartford and Norman Blake. Stewart also plays in a bluegrass band called New Standard.

Every Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 pm the winery has live music for your enjoyment. Take Sunday afternoon off and come out and relax! Great wine, great pizza, great music.

There is no cover charge however tips from the musicians are appreciated.
