The Radford University Planetarium presents the 2017 Eclipse Celebration on Monday, August 21, 2017 in the Radford University Center for the Sciences Building.

The Solar Eclipse will start in Radford, VA at 1:11 pm, with maximum coverage which will be 92% of the sun covered at 2:39 pm and will end at 4:01 pm.

Enjoy hands on activities staffed by our local partners, telescopes with solar filters pointed at sun to find sun spots and solar flares, free eclipse shades given out while supplies last, video conferencing and live stream chat with the Radford University Solar Research Group led by Dr. Michael Freed in Nashville, Tennessee to study and record totality of the eclipse with a special telescope, Museum of Earth Sciences located in the same lobby area as planetarium.

The sun-centered show "Eclipse 2017-Our Star, Our Sun" will be shown throughout the day in the planetarium. This show will explore our own personal, private star, our sun, and what powers it, what sunspots are, how its magnetic field works and how processes deep inside the sun affect our lives. We will explore the Earth-moon-sun geometry of eclipses and answer questions such as why eclipses don't occur every month.

Partners hosting Hands-On Activities include:
• Wine & Design Christiansburg
• Radford City Public Library
• Blacksburg Children's Museum
• Radford City Public Schools
• Radford University' Museum of the Earth Sciences

Additionally, free posters will be given away throughout the day.
