Description:
The Jacksonville Center for the Arts presents a concert by Opera Roanoke and Apprentices Concert on Friday, April 25th.
Founded in 1976 as the Southwest Virginia Opera Society (SVOS), Opera Roanoke has come into its own as one of the most successful arts organizations in the region. Under the able stewardship of Scott Williamson, the group has grown a significant audience, and draws singers, instrumentalists, and set designers of extraordinarily high artistic stature.
Since the 1990s, Opera Roanoke has staged productions which have garnered national recognition. Under Williamson’s leadership, and along with Amy Cofield Williamson, Opera Roanoke launched its Young Apprentice Artist Program. With a founding class of six apprentices, this initiative has grown to include two-dozen young artists from across Virginia and several neighboring states. New collaborative partnerships with the Taubman Museum of Art and Virginia Western Community College (host of the Met “Live in HD” broadcasts), find Opera Roanoke thriving in the heart of a vibrant arts community.
Returning to The Jax, this popular program of presentations by the Apprentice troupe has met with tremendous success. At each Floyd appearance, the group has premiered new productions that they subsequently take on the road to the regional audiences in their service area.
