Description:
The Jacksonville Center for the Arts offers a two day class titled "Antler Baskets" with Pattie Bagley on Saturday, August 17th and Sunday, August 18th from 9am - 5pm each day.

Class Description:
During day one students will use a pre-drilled, #1 grade, naturally shed mule deer antler, students will begin work on a buttocks style antler basket. Students will learn filling-in and shaping techniques. Students will have many different colors and materials from which to choose. During day two students will start with an in-dept demonstration of antler drilling techniques and discussion of antler basket forms, designs and construction.

As students return to weaving on day 2, they will need less help from me and I will have time to hold design sessions for any student who is able to bring their own antler. The other students may sit in on these discussions and/or work on completing their own projects. Any student who does not complete their project in class will leave with plenty of material and all the knowledge they need to complete it on their own.

The instructor will provide all materials necessary to complete the Antler Basket. Students should bring any Basket Weaving tools they already own but the instructor will provide tools to loan & share as well as have tools for purchase. Students may bring an apron if they would like. students are encouraged to bring antlers to use during the drilling demonstration or for the “Design Brainstorming” session. They may also drill the antlers under the instructor’s supervision. The “Rib Basket Construction” used in the antler baskets offers a unique opportunity to use materials for accent weaving that is not generally considered basket materials. We will use various cords, twines and yarns. Students are encouraged to bring materials they would like to weave into their basket. If it can be bent around your finger without breaking, (even if it requires soaking in water) it can be used as accent weaving. A previous student brought a shirt that had belonged to her deceased father. We cut it into strips which she wove into her basket. Another student brought a beaver pelt. Again, we cut it into strips for him to weave into his basket.
